Services are basically extensions to the functionality of the database.

The database is a warehouse of member information and that information need not stay confined within the realms of the database project and could be used for other purposes too such as authenticating users on other Mensa web-sites.

The services sub-project is as stated an extension to the database and is meant to provide an interface to the database.
